At the flea market, among the usual quantities of old books and chipped crockery, there are also to be found more curious objects: elegant agricultural tools, ancient brass bells — even evidence of a murder.
Perhaps more curious still are the stallholders themselves: Bryn, who is not excessively interested in Napoleon; Trevor and Dan and their ‘Mystery Girl’; and Clive Pipton, ‘Dodgy Antique Dealer Extraordinaire!’, whose yellow clogs are proving a hard sell.
Drawn from only the briefest of interactions, all the voices of the flea market are here in these short, sweet, and often unexpectedly poignant stories.

By 175AD the literary satirist Lucian of Samosata was at the peak of his powers. He was wealthy, famous, wildly popular, and — we may assume — contented. Until, that is, he made the acquaintance of a fellow Assyrian in Athens possessed of a remarkable collection of books. Lucian’s disgust on discovering that these books were less for reading than for show resulted in him composing, and then publishing, a poison pen letter so vicious that it stands as a blot on even his rogue’s legacy.
Today we know that letter as Remarks Addressed to an Illiterate Book-Fancier. In this new tête-bêche edition, Nicholas Jeeves first reproduces the Remarks in full, and in the companion piece In Spite of Your Art, goes on to interrupt Lucian’s afterlife to address him with a few choice remarks of his own…

In The Fly, written around 145AD, Lucian of Samosata — then an aspiring rhetorician wandering Ionia and Greece, and only just beginning to make a name for himself — defends the humble housefly. In describing the fly’s anatomy, its character, its virtues, and its place in literature, Lucian reveals his uncanny ability to detect and respond to every tiny detail of his subject.
The book includes a companion piece to The Fly, in which Nicholas Jeeves writes an encomium for the mole — not the mammal responsible for those little mounds of earth that occasionally accumulate on our lawns, but those little mounds of flesh that accumulate on our faces and bodies. He finds that history has a complicated relationship with the mole, in which they have been variously concealed, celebrated, removed, faked, and banned — and even used to divine the futures of their owners.

XXX: The Erotic Letters of James Joyce

Made during the lockdown period of May 2020, and for private circulation only, this small edition of James Joyce’s erotic letters to Nora Barnacle seeks to cast a little light on what is too often considered mere pornography. Read within the context of our social isolation – as Joyce and Nora were unwillingly but necessarily separated in 1909 – we may see that, with these letters, they are sharing a sacred and profane language of their own, a hymn to a secret passion as yearning and as intimate as the act of love itself.
Considering the fact these these letters, though now in the public domain, were once extremely private, this book also makes use of unopened signatures, which must be cut by the reader to reveal the texts within.
Printed at home on a Samsung laser printer, using various copy papers, and perfect bound with PVA glue.
